Years ago, when Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie famously opted for a double mastectomy, it was quite a talking point across the world. Jolie went for it after her mother died at the age of 56 due to breast cancer, and doctors estimated her risk of developing ovarian or breast cancer as 87%. Now, at a time when breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world and the most diagnosed in India and Kerala, we have no option but to be careful. Dr Sanju Cyriac, Senior Consultant of Medical Oncology and Hemato-Oncology at Rajagiri Hospital, and Dr R Anupama of Pran Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, explain who is at risk for the disease, its symptoms, and more.
Who is at risk for breast cancer?
1. Those in the 40 to 55 age group, but youngsters should also be cautious.
2. People with a family history of breast cancer.
3. Those who had radiation exposures at some point.
4. The disease is rarely found in children and teenagers as well.
5. People without children
6. Those who got their periods early
7. Women who had late menopause
8. Women who haven't breastfed despite having children
9. Obese people
10. Those with a history of ovarian cancer
11. Those who have the BRCA1 and 2 genes
What are its symptoms
1. Any thickening or lumps one feels during self-examination in the breast or underarm area.
2. Nipple discharges
3. Bloody, yellow discharges
The treatment
If the cancer is detected early, the lump can be easily removed, allowing it to be cured. If it is at an advanced stage, doctors can remove both the breast and the lump to cure the disease. In advanced stages, patients can also opt for hormonal therapy, chemotherapy and radiation. At least 70% of the breast cancer patients are above the age of 60. However, the youngsters should also be aware of its risks and that any woman can be at risk of cancer.
