Fee in self-financing medical colleges skyrocket to Rs 11-22 lakh in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) has notified the annual fees for MBBS courses, as demanded by the managements, at the 10 self-financing medical colleges in Kerala. The notification was issued as per the instructions of the Kerala High Court.

As per this, the fees for merit seat is Rs 11-22 lakh and NRI seat is Rs 20-30 lakh. This is almost three times the amount recommended by the Justice R Rajendra Babu Committee.

The step was taken after the High Court ordered that the students should be informed about the fees, sought by the managements. This year's fees would be based on the final order of the court or any other court-entrusted authority.

If there is a hike in fees, the students would have to pay that amount.

The medical allotment, scheduled for Monday, was postponed in the changed scenario. No new dates have been announced either. If the fee is hiked, several students would not be able to study as per their original options. Nor is it known if they would be given another opportunity to submit options again.

The admission to 19 self-financing medical colleges is being held this year. Of this, the fees, as demanded by the managements, for 10 colleges were published on Monday.

Though the fees for the remaining nine colleges are not known, the court stipulations will be applicable for those too, the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations has said.
