Karnataka CM Yediyurappa, daughter test positive for coronavirus

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday said he has tested positive for COVID-19.

Reports suggested that his daughter is also suffering from the disease.

"I have tested positive for coronavirus. Whilst I am fine, I am being hospitalised as a precaution on the recommendation of doctors. I request those who have come in contact with me recently to be observant and exercise self quarantine," the veteran BJP leader wrote on Twitter.

The chief minister and his daughter were admitted in the Manipal hospital at the Old Airport Road near Bengaluru.

Yediyurappa was in home quarantine a couple of weeks ago, after some staff members in his office-cum-residence were found infected with the virus. Subsequently, his COVID-19 test results were found to be negative.

However, his latest test results were positive.

Yediyurappa is the fourth member of his cabinet to contract the viral disease. Earlier, Forest Minister Anand Singh, Tourism Minister C T Ravi and Agriculture Minister B C Patil had tested positive for COVID-19.

Congress Legislature Party leader and former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah wished Yediyurappa a speedy recovery.

Earlier on Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. He was also hospitalised.

“After experiencing symptoms of coronavirus I got myself tested and the report has come back positive. My health is fine, but on the advice of the doctors I am getting myself admitted into a hospital. I request everyone who has come in contact with me over the last few days please isolate and get yourselves tested,” Shah wrote on Twitter.

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit also tested positive on Sunday, Chennai's Kauvery hospital informed. The governor has been advised home isolation and will be monitored by a team of doctors from the hospital.

The governor has been in home isolation since July 29 when three Raj Bhavan staff had tested positive for the virus.

Karnataka has recorded close to 1.35 lakh COVID-19 cases so far, of which 74,590 are active. The disease has claimed 2,496 lives in the southern state.
