Tamil Nadu reintroduces Sunday lockdown to curb COVID surge

Tamil Nadu intensifies Covid check at Walayar, e-pass mandatory to cross border

Chennai: In an effort to curb the recent surge in COVID cases, Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday reintroduced Sunday lockdowns, suspended schools and colleges, and imposed a ban on entry of people to places of worship on weekends.

The government has also slashed the number of people who can attend weddings and public functions in the Chennai corporation area.

Schools for grades 1-8 have also been suspended while several restrictions have been imposed on the working of colleges as well.

Mega vaccination camps, previously held on Sundays, will now be conducted on Saturdays.

The decision comes in wake of the recent surge in COVID cases in the state. Tamil Nadu reported 2,731 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday – a 58 per cent jump from the 1,728 it logged on Monday.

Hotspot Chennai recorded 1,489 new cases compared to 876 on Monday.

Chief Minister MK Stalin urged all to follow COVID protocols and take necessary precautions.
