New Delhi: A heated confrontation erupted in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi challenged Home Minister Amit Shah to a debate on his recent press conferences, alleging “vote chori” by the BJP in collusion with the Election Commission.

The exchanges began during a discussion on election reforms, with Shah criticising the Opposition. Gandhi retaliated, questioning the government’s decision to grant full immunity to election commissioners — a move he termed “unprecedented” — and demanding an explanation from the home minister.

“I asked yesterday why election commissioners have been given full immunity for the first time in India’s history. What is the rationale? He mentioned Haryana, but there are numerous examples of vote theft,” Gandhi said. He then publicly challenged Shah: “Amit Shah ji, let us have a debate on the three press conferences. I challenge you.”

Shah responded that he would not structure his remarks to suit Gandhi’s demands or alter the order of his arguments. Gandhi, in turn, described Shah’s reply as “defensive” and evidence of being “rattled and scared”.

As Shah dismissed the allegations Gandhi made in his recent press interactions, tempers rose, leading to loud protests and sharp exchanges between the treasury and the Opposition benches.
