Delhi: In a shocking incident, a 25-year-old man murdered his mother and two siblings in East Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar and later surrendered at the police station. According to Laxmi Nagar police, the accused, Yashbir Singh, walked into the station on Monday evening and confessed to killing his family members.

Singh told police that he strangled his mother, sister and minor brother after feeding them food laced with dhatura (a poisonous plant), saying he was depressed over financial distress.

“His family was facing acute financial hardship and was struggling to make ends meet. His father, a truck driver, has reportedly not been living with the family for the past six months,” police said.

The accused claimed that he had taken a term life insurance policy worth around ₹1.5 crore and had made several attempts to end his life over the past two months by staging accidents, claiming snakebites and injecting air, but failed, a senior police officer told PTI.

“He stated that his mother confronted him a day earlier and told him that if he intended to die, he should first kill all family members and then face the consequences,” the officer said, clarifying that the claims are based on the accused’s version and are being verified.

According to his disclosure, he went to a temple near Yamuna Bank Metro Station on Monday morning, collected dhatura seeds from a nearby plant and prepared laddoos, police said.

He then allegedly fed the laddoos to his mother Kavita (46), sister Meghna (24) and brother Mukul (14). After they lost consciousness, he allegedly strangled them with a muffler between 1.30 pm and 2 pm at their residence. He then went to the police station and surrendered, officers said.

At the time of the incident, his wife was not at home and her role, if any, is also being examined.

Police said the details revealed so far are based on the confession, and the matter is under investigation. Crime scene inspection has begun, and forensic teams are examining the house to collect evidence and ascertain the exact cause of death.

An FIR is being registered, and investigation teams have been formed to verify the sequence of events and corroborate the accused’s claims, police added.

The officer said the accused, a driver by profession, had reportedly been unemployed for the past six months. His arrest has been formally recorded, and interrogation is underway.

Police said no PCR call was received regarding the incident; the accused himself appeared at the station to report the crime.

When police arrived at the house in Subhash Chowk, the bodies were found inside the residence. Senior officers are examining whether the deaths were caused solely by strangulation or whether poisoning also played a role, as claimed by the accused.

Statements of neighbours and relatives are being recorded to assess the family’s financial condition.
