Thiruvananthapuram: Socio-economic status least bothered middle-aged Kumari in her search for a daughter-in-law. Finally, a resident of the city’s Sree Chitra Home for Destitutes and Infirm proved to be the ideal choice as the wife for her son.
Sanjay Chandran thus wedded Sudheena, who has been living in the Home for 12 years. The wedding on Friday meant the young woman has found a new accommodation: Kizhakkekara Puthanveedu house in suburban Kodunganoor.
It was their father’s death in 2006 that brought Sudheena and her sister Soorya to the destitute home. Soorya, too, got married in the precincts of the Home, which has of late launched a website with a section on matrimonial alliances. (So far, the 1943-founded home has facilitated 70 marriages of its residents.)
As for Sudheena, she is doing her B.Ed after having done an MA in Malayalam literature. Sanjay runs a photo studio at downtown Vellayambalam.
Recently, Sanjay’s father approached the Home in search of an alliance. “I could immediately sense Sudheena could be a good match for this boy,” says K K Usha, the superintendent of the Home. Subsequently, the state’s social welfare department did the customary inquiry about the prospective groom. Soon, Sanjay and Sudheena met. They liked each other.
The wedding was sermonised by minister K K Sailaja, who handed over the garlands to the couple. Among the attendees at the ceremony were mayor V K Prasanth, members of the Home’s managing committee and officials of the social welfare board.
The Home gifted the couple with jewellery weighing six sovereigns.
