Thiruvananthapuram: Amid a wooden cot, plastic chairs and big utensils, class I student B S Sanjana watched the run-down television at the relief camp at the Valiyathura Government UP School in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. This was day one of her formal school education. A photo of the girl, stretching out on the floor of her camp and watching television, made it to the page 1 of Malayala Manorama the next day.

And soon after, she was gifted a television and laptop. As per Sanjana's wishes, her family handed over the television to her friends at the camp. They can now all attend the virtual classes and learn together.

Sanjana has been living at the camp for the past one year as her house was destroyed after the sea ravaged the coastline. Sanjana is the daughter of fisherfolk J Biju and Susy. Her brother Sanjay is a kidney patient.

Like other students across the state, Sanjana too attended the virtual sessions on the television at the camp earlier this week.

Taking cognizance of the condition at the camp, the Youth Congress, Poojappura Lions And Leo Club came forward to help. The television was gifted to the camp as the 100th service project of the Lions Club. One room at the camp would be prepared so that all students can watch the television together. Youth Congress state secretary Tom Kora Anjeril handed over the laptop.

State vice-president S M Balu, councillor Sheeba Patrick, Lion's Club International 318A second vice-district governor Dr Kannan, Poojapura Lions Club president V Byju, Leo Club president Malavika, and secretary Anil among others took part in the event.

Kerala switched to the virtual education system for the new academic year as the educational institutions continue to remain shut due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
