Tiruchirappalli: A Keralite youth was beaten to death by a mob at Allur village in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu in an incident likely as a result of mistaken identity.

The victim has been identified as Deepu, a native of Malayankeezhu in Thiruvananthapuram district.

The mob likely mistook Deepu and his friend Aravind for robbers and both were assaulted.

Aravind has been detained by the Jeeyapuram police.

The incident happened last midnight in a residential area at Vishalaxmi Nagar at Allur within the Jiyapuram police limits.

A quarrel ensued as Deepu and Aravind were questioned by a few locals who suspected the duo had arrived to break into homes. Soon, the spat worsened and they were beaten by the few people who had gathered.

Though Deepu and Aravind managed to flee, the locals chased them and dragged the former to the spot where they were initially found. Deepu was subjected to more assaults.

Though Jeeyapuram police arrived at the spot by then and admitted Deepu to the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Tiruchirappalli, 18 km away, he had succumbed by then.
