Kannur: Three escort vehicles in Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's convoy were involved in a serial collision here last midnight.

All the occupants in the vehicles are safe. The CM's car was way ahead of the vehicles involved in the accident. CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishan's car was also tailing the CM's vehicle.

The accident happened at Perumba as the CM was returning after a function of his party CPM, in the neighbouring Kasaragod district. The exact accident spot was a little ahead of the bridge at Perumba.

The vehicles involved in the crash were the ambulance that was immediately behind the two CPM bigwigs, the car of the Special Branch Deputy Superintendent of Police and another police escort vehicle.

The accident occurred as the ambulance stopped suddenly as another vehicle intruded into the CM's convoy. Soon, the vehicle behind hit the ambulance and the one behind the former struck the one in front.

Payyannur police have registered a case. A probe has already commenced.
