Thiruvananthapuram: The Food and Civil Supplies Department has decided to distribute raw and boiled rice to all ration-card holders in a 50:50 ratio.
Announcing the decision, Minister G R Anil said the department has received the Central government's approval for the move. The distribution will commence from this month itself.
Currently, less amount of raw rice is being distributed to white- and blue-card holders. Instances of white-card holders not getting raw rice are frequently reported.
The minister said as many as 93 per cent of white-card holders (non-priority) visited the ration outlets when free food kits were distributed. Their number dropped to 62.7 per cent last month.
He added that Keralaities' favourite Andhra Jaya, Surekha and Bondalu varieties of rice would be made available to all categories of card holders. The department has reached an understanding with the Food Corporation of India to get these varieties of rice. Currently, Kerala has been mostly getting Sona Masoori from Punjab.

White-card holders will be provided 10 kilograms of rice this month. Their share of rice has been increased from last months' five kilograms to seven kilograms. Rice will be provided at Rs 10.90 a kilogram, and the additional three kilograms could be bought for Rs 15 a kilogram.
Blue-card holders (above poverty line) will be provided additional three kilograms of rice at Rs 15 a kilogram.
The department has extended up to March 31 the sale of an additional half-litre of kerosene, which was announced for Christmas.
