Kozhikode: The Kerala Public Works Department has decided to take action against the engineer responsible for the incident in which a two-wheeler rider was seriously injured when his bike fell into a gutter which was dug up as part of the culvert construction along the state highway in Thamarassery in Kozhikode district.

PWD minister P A Mohammed Riyas gave instructions to the department higher-ups to transfer Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) Assistant Engineer PS Arathi from the Kannur road division to the Muvattupuzha division in connection with the incident.

The action was taken on the basis of the report of the KSTP Project Director that the official did not take proper safety precaution at the construction site where the accident occurred.

The contractor was given a show cause notice for haphazard construction methods. In addition, the incident will be probed by the PWD Vigilance Wing.

It was on Wednesday around 10pm that Abdul Razak, 56, fell into the gutter and sustained serious injuries in his thigh muscles.

It is alleged that no proper safety measures were enforced or warning boards erected at the culvert construction site on the road. Only a red ribbon was put up on an iron rode.
