Kerala adds 63 cases to omicron tally, Thiruvananthapuram college turns cluster

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has reported 63 more cases of COVID-19 caused by the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Of them, 15 cases were reported in Thrissur district, Health Minister Veena George said in a press release on Tuesday. The remaining cases are in Thiruvananthapuram (14), Kollam (10), Ernakulam (8), Malappuram (4), Idukki (3), Palakkad (2), Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Kozhikode (one each) districts.

Four of the infected people are Tamil Nadu natives who came from abroad. Thirty-six cases are from low-risk countries and nine from high-risk countries. Nine are from other states.

Nine people contracted the virus through contact with others infected. Seven of them are from Thiruvananthapuram and two from Thrissur.

Six cases detected in Thiruvananthapuram are students of a private college. The cases were confirmed in tests conducted after the students returned after a tour. Now the college has been identified as an Omicron cluster.

The Omicron caseload in the state has risen to 591. This includes 401 from low-risk countries and 101 from high-risk countries. Of the total cases, 70 contracted the virus through contact. There are 19 cases from other states.
