Thuvvur: 18 families living near the railway gate have been unable to take their vehicles up to their homes for the last eight years after the railways shut down their road. Elderly people who are too weak to walk are often carried to the vehicles that are parked at the end of the road. The people living here cannot even bring home the mortal remains of the dear ones as the road remain closed.

The families residing in this area have been using the land owned by the railways to take their vehicles homes, for more than a century. The railways have also charged money from these families on the basis of a lease agreement. ₹12000 were paid by the families as lease for ten years in 2000.

However, in 2015, the railways urged the families to pay ₹406984 after they admitted a mistake in calculating the amount. Besides, they were informed to pay a pending amount from 2010 to 2020.

As the families were unable to pay such a huge amount, the railway was then forced to shut down the road. Meanwhile, the families have raised the issue with the authorities and have even sent complaints to the Prime Minster and the Chief Minister.

However, the railway authorities continue to show apathy towards their plight. There are elderly people and patients at many homes here. They have not been able to go to the hospital regularly for proper medical treatment as they have been denied their right to movement.
