Kochi: Hours after a passenger died by suicide on Thursday, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident. The deceased, Nizar, a native of Malappuram, ended his life by jumping from the metro track near Vadakkekota. Though he was rushed to Medical Trust Hospital here, doctors declared him dead on arrival.

In a press statement, KMRL described the incident as “extremely unfortunate” and announced that a detailed investigation, led by the Director (Systems), has been initiated to examine the circumstances. Observing the seriousness of the issue, KMRL also recommended necessary preventive measures.

According to KMRL, the passenger jumped onto the viaduct track between Vadakkekota and SN Junction Metro stations around 2.04 pm on Thursday. The Emergency Trip Switch (ETS) was immediately activated by security personnel, and power to the third rail was switched off to ensure safety.

“Kochi Metro’s operations and security teams responded swiftly. Senior officials, police, and fire services were informed promptly. To manage the disruption, short-loop services were initiated between Aluva and Kadavanthra. Despite persistent efforts to rescue the individual, the passenger jumped from the viaduct to the road below at around 14.36 hrs. Emergency personnel were present and managed the situation. Track clearance was received at 14.43 hrs, and normal services between Kadavanthra and Thripunithura resumed by 14.44 hrs,” KMRL said in its statement.
