Kozhikode: A 51-year-old woman was electrocuted while sweeping the courtyard of her house on Saturday morning. The deceased has been identified as Usha, a native of Thodanoor in Vadakara.
According to reports, she died after coming into contact with a live power line that had snapped when a tree was uprooted.
Thodannur area witnessed heavy rain accompanied by strong winds on Friday night, which led to trees being uprooted and branches breaking in several places. One such fallen tree is believed to have snapped the power line near Usha’s house. Sadly, while Usha was cleaning the premises the next morning, she trampled the live wire while sweeping the ground, they said.
Though she was rushed to Vadakara Government Taluk hospital, her life could not be saved.
Usha is the latest victim of several similar accidents involving powerlines snapped from nearby electric poles in Kerala in recent times.
A 19-year-old youth died in Nedumangadu in Thiruvananthapuram district recently after coming into contact with a live wire that had snapped and fallen on the road, following heavy rains.
The electrocution of an eighth standard student, after coming into contact with a live wire, at an aided school in Thevalakkara in Kollam district triggered a political row in the state last month.
