Thrissur native dies of amoebic meningoencephalitis at Kozhikode MCH, 9 under treatment

Kozhikode: One more person has died of amoebic meningoencephalitis in Kozhikode. The deceased is Raheem (59), a native of Chavakkad in Thrissur. He passed away on Friday evening while undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode.
According to the Community Medicine Department, Raheem was admitted to the intensive care unit and was diagnosed with the disease earlier in the day at the hospital’s microbiology lab. His condition worsened rapidly, and he succumbed to the infection in the evening.
Officials confirmed that nine more patients are currently under treatment for amoebic meningoencephalitis at Kozhikode MCH.
Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) is caused by Naegleria fowleri. It rapidly invades and destroys brain tissue, leading to severe swelling and often proving fatal. Granulomatous Amoebic Encephalitis (GAE) is triggered by other amoeba species, this form also attacks the brain but usually progresses more slowly.
