Farmlands along Parakkadavu river slowly vanish into water in Kozhikode

Nadapuram: The network of farmlands along both banks of the Parakkadavu River, a tributary of the Mayyazhi River, is facing severe erosion, with large portions being claimed by the water.
In the Thuneri and Chekkyadu panchayats, farmlands without protective walls are gradually being swallowed by the river. Coconut trees and other vegetation along the banks are disappearing, while several areca nut trees growing close to the river have also been lost to the waters.
Although a river protection wall was constructed along the Ummathoor–Chetyola stretch, most of the river bank here still remains exposed without adequate protection. Even the existing wall has started to crumble at multiple points.
While floodwaters recede from farmlands during the summer, by then a significant portion of the land has already been claimed by the river. Farmers lament that they are left without compensation for their losses.
