Speaking during the Question Hour in the Assembly, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the state has yet to receive the ₹260.65 crore that the Centre sanctioned for the landslide-hit Wayanad. The CM said that Kerala had initially sought ₹2,262 crore from the Centre for rehabilitation and reconstruction. A Post-Disaster Needs Assessment report later revised the requirement to ₹2,221.10 crore.
The report assessed the cost of rebuilding livelihoods and rehabilitating dependents of those who lost their lives. The Sub-Committee of the National Executive Committee also discussed the matter with a state-level panel led by Chief Secretary Dr A Jayathilak. “It is learnt that the Centre has allotted ₹260.65 crore, but the amount is still pending,” Vijayan said.
He recalled that Kerala had urged the Centre to declare the Wayanad landslide a “national disaster” and pressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to restore loan waiver provisions under the Disaster Management Act. However, he said no positive response has been received so far.
On rehabilitation, Vijayan said the township project for survivors is progressing on 64.475 hectares of land at Elston estate. A total of 295 beneficiaries have consented to move into new houses, and 49 more names have been added after scrutiny. The project is expected to be completed by January 2026.
