Nenmara: A farmer in Kerala has successfully grown and harvested the Telangana Sona variety of paddy. Telangana Sona RNR – 15048, which is great for diabetic patients due to its low glycemic index, is ready to be harvested under the Nenmara Krishi Bhavan limits. This rice is white in colour and is fragrant like the jeerakashala variety.

K Bhaskaran of the Vithanassery Kannode padasekharam grew the Telangana Sona variety as the primary crop in his 50-cent field. As much as 15 kg of seeds is enough to be sown in one acre of land. The seed variety developed by Professor Jayashankar of Telangana State Agriculture University is cultivated in states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

The saplings need less manure than other crops. Although it takes up to 130 days for the paddy to be ready for harvest, Telangana Sona is already ready for harvest. The crop could be grown successfully despite unfavourable weather conditions and fungal infections in the region.

Bhaskaran said that the high-yielding paddy variety enjoys a good market, and the harvested grains would be turned into rice before supplying them. Nenmara agriculture officer V Arunima, assistant agriculture officer C Santhosh, field assistant J Ajmal and padasekhara secretaries KN Ponnu and NG Bhoopathi visited the field.
