Iudkki: The coffee from Keezhanthoor, known for its rich aroma and superior taste, is seeing a sharp rise in demand. The current price for a kilo of ripe coffee beans stands at ₹80, and farmers are hopeful that it could soon reach ₹100.

Although production has fallen due to erratic weather patterns, the higher prices have brought much-needed relief to growers. The hilly terrain of Keezhanthoor gives its coffee a distinct flavour, and local producers are now finding markets overseas as well. A private company has begun sourcing beans directly from farmers to make coffee powder exported to countries such as Germany and Cuba.

Coffee cultivation thrives across the Anchunadu region — including Kanthalloor, Keezhanthoor, Kulachivayal, Vettukad, Pallanad and Kappistore in Marayur. The region mainly grows Kaveri, Selection and Arabica varieties, with harvesting taking place in September and October.

While coffee from other areas fetches between ₹30 and ₹50 per kilo, Keezhanthoor’s beans command a premium price of ₹80. Local organisations such as the Mannarkad Social Service Society also actively procure coffee from the region.
Apart from coffee, Keezhanthoor is renowned for its high-quality winter vegetables, sandalwood and Marayur jaggery — all prized for their exceptional quality.
