Mararikulam: Mararikulam railway station has been reeling under insufficient infrastructure and poor facilities while the authorities continue their apathy. This is the only station between Alappuzha and Cherthala where long distance trains have a stop.
Lack of an overbridge is the main challenge faced by passengers here. The passengers have to cross the railway track to reach the second platform. Elderly people and those who come with children are often seen struggling to cross the tracks.
Besides, the platforms do not have roof, exposing the passengers to rains and hot summer sun. Moreover, these deserted platforms with no basic facilities become a hub of stray dogs at night. There are no basic facilities including toilets for the passengers.
Passengers usually park their vehicles outside the station due to the exorbitant parking fee in the station premises. Meanwhile, complaints have been rife against such illegal parking on the road side. Mararikulam is the only stop between Alappuzha and Cherthala for long distance trains like the Alleppey – Dhanbad Express, Maveli Express and Guruvayoor – Thiruvananthapuram Intercity.
Hundreds of pilgrims going to Kreupasanam, Arthunkal Basilica, Mararikulam temple, Kanichukulangara temple and Thiruvizha temple as well as tourists heading to the Marari Beach relies on this railway station.
