The state government has increased the ceiling of the amount which can be spent for the maintenance of escort vehicles of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Seven official vehicles are included under Z+ category in the CM's convoy.

As per the current norms, the State Police Chief is authorised to spend ₹1.5 lakh annually for the maintenance of these vehicles. This rate was fixed in 2019. The amount has now been revised to ₹2 lakh per vehicle. The Home Department has upped the limit of maintenance expenditure following a letter sent by the state police chief.

The DGP pointed out in the letter that the cost of tyres and other spare parts has increased. The labour cost has also gone up significantly. Besides, additional recurring expenses due to accidents have necessitated the need to increase the limit of maintenance expenditure of CM's escort vehicles. It was cited that if the bills of service and maintenance are not paid before the next service date, repair works cannot be carried out.

The DGP placed a request to raise the slab for maintenance expense in February and recently in October, another letter was sent to the government. Six Innova Crysta and one Kia Carnival are included under Z+ category vehicles in the CM's convoy. The oldest model is Innova Crysta which was purchased in 2018. Two Crysta vehicles were purchased in 2025. All the other vehicles were purchased between 2021 and 2022.
