The Kerala State Election Commission (SEC) on Wednesday issued an order reserving three of the six mayoral posts in municipal corporations in the state for women in the upcoming local body polls.

The posts have been reserved for women in the Kochi, Thrissur, and Kannur corporations. This means Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Kollam will have male mayors following the elections.

Moreover, of the state's 87 municipalities, 44 chairperson posts have been reserved for women, including three for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates. Of the total seats, six are reserved for members of the SC community and one for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community.

As for the 14 district panchayats, seven will have women presidents, while one post has been reserved for an SC member. The district panchayats with reserved president posts for women are Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. In Ernakulam, the post is for the SC category, while the remaining districts fall under the general category.

Regarding block panchayats, the SEC said that of the total 152 president posts, 67 have been reserved for women. In addition, eight posts have been reserved for SC women and two for ST women. Meanwhile, seven block panchayats will have presidents from the SC community and one from the ST community.
