Kasaragod: A new flyover on National Highway 66 has been opened at Cherkkala on a temporary basis, allowing traffic movement in both directions. The length of this newly opened flyover, which extends from near the Chengala panchayat office to VK Para, is 650 metres.
Simultaneously, works are also advancing on a second flyover at VK Para and a 900-metre bridge that opens a link to the Cherkkala–Erdaneer–Kalladka road.
Construction of the service road for he newly opened flyover is still underway. The flyover at Cherkkala is the first to be opened along the Chengala–Nileshwar stretch of the NH, built by Megha Company. Along the Talapady–Cherkkala stretch of NH 66, this is also the third flyover to become operational.
Meanwhile, concerns over soil erosion persist along the road up to Kanathumkundu in Thekkil, where soil had been removed for road development. No work is currently underway here. Locals have complained that the measures taken to ensure safe traffic and avert possible danger are progressing too slowly.
Although officials from the National Highways Authority of India and the contracting company have been inspecting the site and reviewing the situation, adequate progress is yet to be seen in completing the remaining works.
