Thiruvananthapuram: The state will have 72,005 candidates in the provisional list for the upcoming local body elections, according to data released by the State Election Commission (SEC) on Monday. The numbers were published after the 3 pm deadline for withdrawing nominations had concluded.

According to the data, 37,786 women, 34,218 men and one transgender candidate remain in the contest across the 14 districts. Malappuram leads with 7,786 candidates, followed by Kozhikode (5,884), Thrissur (6,907), and Ernakulam (6,571). Wayanad has the lowest number of contestants at 1,908. However, the SEC clarified that the figures are not final.

The provisional roll was prepared based on nominations that remained valid following scrutiny and subsequent withdrawals.
