Kuttikkanam: A bus transporting Sabarimala pilgrims overturned, leaving 20 people injured, two of them critically. The accident occurred on the Kollam–Theni National Highway between Kuttikkanam and Valanjakanam.
The bus, carrying pilgrims from Karur in Tamil Nadu, lost control at a curve just before the steep descent past Kuttikkanam and overturned. There were 43 passengers on board. The accident took place around 6 am. Among the injured, one person suffered a severe head injury, and another sustained serious injuries to the hand.
The injured were rushed to Mundakkayam Medical Trust Hospital, while those in critical condition were shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam.
Rescue operations were carried out swiftly by local commuters, Peermade Highway Police and the Peermade Fire Force. Police officials said that drivers' unfamiliarity with the hilly terrain is the main reason for such accidents. Authorities have urged extreme caution while navigating the steep, winding roads of the high ranges.
