The second phase of the Kerala local body elections will be held on December 11 in seven northern districts of the state: Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. Polling will take place from 7 am to 6 pm, after a mock poll at 6 am. The first phase of polling took place in the remaining seven districts on December 9.

Counting and announcement of results
Counting will begin at 8 am on December 13. Postal ballots will be counted first, followed by EVM votes. The TREND software will provide real-time updates and results. After results are declared, newly elected members will be sworn in, followed by elections to chairperson, vice-chairperson and standing committees as scheduled by the commission.

The voter list for this phase includes 1,53,37,176 electors, comprising:

  • 72,46,269 men
  • 80,90,746 women
  • 161 transgender voters
  • 3,293 NRI voters

A total of 38,994 candidates are contesting:

  • 28,274 in grama panchayats
  • 3,742 in block panchayats
  • 681 in district panchayats
  • 5,546 in municipalities
  • 751 in corporations

Polling stations and equipment
Phase 2 will have 18,274 polling stations, including 2,055 sensitive booths:

  • Thrissur – 81
  • Palakkad – 180
  • Malappuram – 295
  • Kozhikode – 166
  • Wayanad – 189
  • Kannur – 1,025
  • Kasaragod – 119

A total of 18,274 control units and 49,019 ballot units have been readied after candidate setting. An additional 2,631 control units and 6,943 ballot units have been kept in reserve.

Kerala local body election results 2020
In 2020, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) registered a strong victory, retaining dominance across most local bodies.

Voter turnout: 76.2% (1.5% drop from 2015)

  • LDF: 40.2% vote share (up 2.8%)
    Won 514 grama panchayats, 108 block panchayats, 11 district panchayats, 35 municipalities and 5 corporations
  • UDF: 37.9% vote share (down 0.7%)
    Won 321 grama panchayats, 38 block panchayats, 1 district panchayat, 23 municipalities and 1 corporation
  • NDA: 15% vote share (up 1.7%)
    Won 19 grama panchayats, with minor gains elsewhere
