Alappuzha: Breaking a long-standing trend in the Mavelikkara Municipality, two of the three former vice-chairpersons have returned to the civic body after winning in the latest local body elections.

Traditionally, councillors who served as vice-chairperson of the Mavelikkara Municipality had failed to secure a second term in subsequent elections.

T Krishnakumari, vice-chairperson of the outgoing municipal council, won from Ward 14, while Lalitha Raveendranath, who held the post during the first term of the previous council, emerged victorious from Ward 24. Lalitha Raveendranath had earlier served as chairperson of the municipality.

With the United Democratic Front (UDF) securing control of the civic body, both leaders are now being considered strong contenders for the chairperson's post.

Meanwhile, former vice-chairperson Geethakumari, who contested from Ward 10 as a BJP candidate, was defeated in the election.
