Kochi: Water supply to Kochi and the surrounding areas remained disrupted after a pipeline ruptured during construction work by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL).

The 300-mm cast iron pipeline broke near Metro pillar number 540 at Kaloor around midnight on Friday while the second-phase Metro Rail construction was underway.

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has been carrying out repair work, and water supply continued to be affected on Sunday as well. The KWA expects the repair work to be completed by today.

Officials said soil erosion was noticed at the site on a limited scale. Although another adjacent pipeline was also damaged, it did not lead to any major disruption. Steps are under way to replace the damaged pipe, and the cost of the repair work will be borne by KMRL.

Water supply in the city is expected to face intermittent disruptions while the replacement work is in progress. Following the rupture, KWA officials conducted an inspection and put temporary arrangements in place, supplying water at reduced pressure. The low-pressure supply continued on Sunday as well.

To prevent waterlogging at the site of pipe rupture, water is being continuously pumped out. The disruption has affected water distribution in areas including Kaloor, Anjumana, Edappally, Palarivattom, Padivattom and Cheranalloor panchayat.
