People from all walks of life gathered at the Tripunithura taluk hospital and later at the Town Hall as Kerala mourned one of its most influential cinematic voices.
Sreenivasan, who had been unwell for the past few years, passed away on Saturday morning while being taken for routine dialysis. Though he was rushed to the nearby Tripunithura taluk hospital, doctors declared him brought dead. His mortal remains were later taken to his residence in Udayamperoor.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described Sreenivasan’s death as an irreparable loss to Malayalam cinema, noting his unique ability to portray the life of the common man through humour, realism and sharp social insight.
Tributes poured in from across the film industry and political circles, with colleagues remembering Sreenivasan as a rare storyteller who used satire and simplicity to reflect deep social realities. Veteran actor Mammootty was among the first to arrive and pay homage to his long-time colleague at his residence.
Actor and Kollam MLA Mukesh, screenwriter and actor Renji Panicker, and director Sathyan Anthikad were among those who paid their respects at the hospital. Several filmmakers, actors and cultural figures also visited Sreenivasan’s residence through the day.
Over a career spanning nearly five decades, Sreenivasan received numerous honours, including a National Film Award, two Filmfare Awards South and six Kerala State Film Awards. He won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Screenplay for Sandesam and Mazhayethum Munpe.
Sreenivasan is survived by his wife Vimala Sreenivasan and two sons, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan, both of whom are active in the Malayalam film industry.
