Thiruvananthapuram: Elections to choose Mayors and Deputy Mayors in city corporations and Chairpersons and Vice-Chairpersons in municipalities across Kerala will be held on Friday.

The elections for Corporation Mayors and Municipal Chairpersons will be conducted at 10.30 am, while the polls for Deputy Mayors and Vice-Chairpersons will be held at 2.30 pm.

Meanwhile, elections to the posts of President in grama, block, and district panchayats have been scheduled for 10.30 am on December 27, with the Vice-President elections to follow at 2.30 pm.

Key procedures
The following are some of the key criteria governing these elections:

  • Candidates who won the recent local body elections but did not take the oath as members on December 21 will not have voting rights.
  • A quorum is formed when half of the members with voting rights are present.
  • A candidate contesting for the posts of Mayor, Chairperson or other chief positions must be nominated by one member and supported by another.
  • A member contesting for a reserved post need not be nominated or supported — they only need to state, “I am contesting.”
  • If only one Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe member is elected in a local body where the chief’s post is reserved for these categories, that lone member can be made president without an election.
  • If there are more than two candidates, the candidate who receives more votes than all the others combined will be declared elected.
