Thrissur: A woman and her five-year-old son were found dead at their home in Adat Ambalakkavu here on Wednesday morning. Police suspect that the mother killed the child and later died by suicide.

The deceased is Shilpa (30), wife of Mohith of Kanatt House, and their son, Akshayajith (5). According to Shilpa’s husband, he had moved to another room as he was suffering from fever. When Shilpa did not open the room on Wednesday morning, he checked and found the two dead.

The child was found lying on the bed, while Shilpa was found hanging. The Peramangalam police have registered a case and launched an investigation.

"It was suspected that the mother strangulated the baby, before killing herself. We can ascertain the exact cause of the death only after the post-mortem," a senior police officer said.

An investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the deaths, police added.

Mohith works at a private financial institution.
