Kochi: Kerala scripted a new chapter in organ donation as ten-month-old Alin Sherin Abraham from Pathanamthitta became the state’s youngest organ donor on Friday. Her organs will give new life to four people.
The organs were transported from Amrita Hospital in Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram by road under police escort. The ambulance KL07 DF 3177 left for the state capital around 7.15 pm and reached Thiruvananthapuram shortly after 10.30 pm. It travelled via Kunnumpuram, Edappally, Vyttila, Kundannur, Tripunithura, Thalayolaparambu, Kottayam, Chengannur, Venjaramoodu and Kazhakkoottam. Police imposed traffic curbs along the route to ensure smooth passage.
With the consent of the child’s father, the organ donation process was coordinated through the government system K-SOTTO. Alin’s heart valve was sent to Sree Chitra Institute in Thiruvananthapuram, her liver to KIMS Hospital, and her kidneys to Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College. Her eyes will also be donated to the Eye Bank.
Both kidneys will be transplanted into a 10-year-old girl undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College, while a six-month-old girl from Thiruvananthapuram will receive the donated liver. Hospital sources said the transplant surgeries would be carried out immediately.
Alin was declared brain-dead after sustaining serious injuries in a road accident in Kottayam on February 5. The accident occurred around 2.30 pm near Pallam Borma Junction on the MC Road while she was travelling with her mother and maternal grandparents. The car collided with another vehicle coming from the opposite direction.
The toddler was initially admitted to hospitals in Changanassery and Thiruvalla and was later shifted to Amrita Hospital in Kochi on the night of February 6 for specialised care. Despite intensive treatment, doctors could not save her. Brain death was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon.
Health Minister Veena George thanked the girl’s parents for their decision to donate their child’s organs and extended support to the bereaved family.
