Taliparamba Assembly Elections 2026: The UDF-backed independent T K Govindan has won the Taliparamba Assembly seat, ending the CPM’s decades-long dominance in one of its strongest bastions in Kannur district by 12,551 votes. Govindan garnered 91,339 votes, whereas CPM's P K Shyamala got 78,788 votes, according to ECI data released at 7.27 pm on Monday.

Govindan maintained a steady lead through the counting process after surging ahead by 18,628 votes by Round 9. By Round 14, he had secured around 81,697 votes, sealing his victory. P K Shyamala, who mounted a partial recovery in later rounds, trailed despite reducing the margin at one stage. She had polled 65,834 votes by Round 15.

Shyamala had initially taken a narrow lead of 809 votes in Round 1, but it was quickly overturned as Govindan gained ground in subsequent rounds. By Round 12, she had narrowed the deficit to 10,069 votes, but was unable to regain the lead.

The result marks a sharp reversal from the 2021 Assembly election, when CPM state secretary M V Govindan won the seat by a margin of 22,689 votes. Taliparamba had remained a CPM stronghold since 1970, often delivering comfortable victories with margins exceeding 40,000 votes.

Govindan, a veteran leader and former CPM district secretariat member, contested as a UDF-backed independent after breaking away from the party. His campaign centred on opposition to “nepotism,” following the CPM’s decision to field Shyamala, the wife of M V Govindan. His victory is seen as a significant blow to the party’s organisational strength in the region.

The UDF’s decision to back Govindan instead of fielding its own candidate proved crucial, helping consolidate anti-CPM votes in the constituency. The outcome also reflects an internal split within the CPM’s traditional vote base, turning what was once a safe seat into a closely watched contest.

Early indicators had pointed to a tightening race. The Onmanorama poll metre suggested growing competition in the constituency, although the Manorama News–C Voter exit poll had predicted a comfortable win for the LDF.

Warning signs for the CPM had emerged earlier. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader K Sudhakaran secured a lead of around 8,000 votes in the Taliparamba segment. While the LDF regained some ground in the 2025 local body polls, its margins were significantly lower than in previous Assembly elections.

The addition of around 14,000 new voters ahead of the 2026 polls also appeared to influence the outcome, with the UDF claiming gains among this segment.

With this result, Taliparamba shifts from being a predictable CPM fortress to a constituency marked by internal dissent and changing voter alignments, making Govindan’s victory one of the most significant upsets of the election.
