An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 that jolted Dhaka and nearby regions at 10.30 am local time also affected the second Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland at Mirpur.
Footage available online shows play being stopped abruptly in the second session on Day 3, with some players squatting on the ground as they presumably felt the tremors.
Journalist Mohammad Isam, who was reporting the match for ESPNcricinfo, posted on his X account that the match was stopped for a few minutes. "We ran down from the press box, which was shaking tremendously," Isam wrote.
Though play reportedly resumed within five minutes, with no untoward incidents happening inside the stadium, damages were reported in other parts of the country.
According to reports, at least three were killed and several others were injured in the earthquake. According to the Met department, the epicentre was Narsingdi on the northeastern outskirts of Dhaka.
Soon after the match resumed, Bangladesh dismissed Ireland for 265 to take a massive lead of 211 runs. The hosts chose not to enforce follow-on and began their second innings. Bangladesh won the first match by an innings and 47 runs.
