Sanju Samson and Rohan S Kunnummal set a record for the highest opening wicket partnership in the history of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 event.

Sanju and Rohan stitched up an unbeaten 177-run stand to power Kerala to a 10-wicket win over Odisha in Lucknow on Wednesday. Rohan scored 121 not out off 60 balls, hitting 10 boundaries and as many sixes. Sanju, who captains Kerala, made 51 not out off 41, with six boundaries and a six.

Interestingly, Gujarat openers Aarya Desai and Urvil Patel almost broke the record on the same day. They added 174 runs as Gujarat chased down Services' total of 182/9 in just 12.3 overs at Hyderabad.

Desai was dismissed for 60 off 35, while captain Patel remained unbeaten on 119 off just 37 deliveries, hitting 12 boundaries and 10 sixes.

Kerala will take on Railways in their second match of the event on Friday. Kerala are in Elite Group A, and will also play Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Mumbai, Andhra and Assam.

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is a prestigious annual T20 event that began in the 2006-07 season, and serves as a testing ground for domestic players ahead of the IPL.
