Super League Kerala (SLK) side Malappuram FC have announced the signing of Fijian international Roy Krishna, who was quite popular in the Indian Super League in recent seasons.

The 38-year-old striker had parted ways with ISL side Odisha FC in June, bringing an end to a two-year stint, which included an AFC Cup campaign. Krishna has played in India since the 2019-20 season, representing ATK, Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC during the period.

He scored 49 goals from 85 appearances in the ISL, placing him third among the all-time scorers, behind Sunil Chhetri (70) and Bart Ogbeche (53).

"I can't wait to experience the thrill of the league and the energy of the fans," Krishna was quoted as saying by Malappuram FC in a statement. "I want to get back to India and return to the pitch as early as possible," he said. The club said their marquee signing will land in Kochi on Wednesday.

Krishna's great-grandparents were from Kolkata, but he was born and raised in Fiji, an island country in the South Pacific, which is closer to New Zealand.

SLK was launched last season as a men's professional league in Kerala. The inaugural season had six franchises, namely Malappuram, Calicut FC, Forca Kochi, Kannur Warriors, Thiruvananthapuram Kombans and Thrissur Magic. The first season was played between September and November last year and the second edition is expected to begin later this year. Calicut FC are the defending champions.
