H S Prannoy had to wait more than six months to return to competition, in the Malaysia Open. But that return game lasted a whole day because of an infamous roof leakage that led to a suspension of play.
Eventually, Prannoy defeated Canada's Brian Yang 21-12, 17-21, 21-15 to advance to the pre-quarterfinals in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
The game had begun on Tuesday, but was discontinued, with Prannoy leading 21-12, 9-11. Though the Thiruvananthapuram native lost the second game when play resumed today, he regained composure to seal the decider.
“A win after a long break... fittingly, in a match that took one too,” joked Prannoy on X (also called Twitter). He will take on seventh seed Shi Feng Li of China, who ousted Priyanshu Rajawat 21-11, 21-16.
Malvika Bansod and the doubles pairs of Tanisha Crasto/Dhruv Kapila and Sathish Kumar Karunakaran/Aadya Variyath also sailed into the pre-quarterfinals. Bansod defeated local favourite Goh Jin Wei 21-15, 21-16.
