PV Sindhu's campaign in the India Open ended in the quarterfinals after a thrilling battle with Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. The two-time Olympic medallist showed great determination to recover from the verge of a straight-sets defeat and stretch the game into a decider before surrendering 9-21, 21-19, 17-21.
Sindhu trailed the second game 3-9 before bouncing back to draw level at 9 points. Tunjung was error-prone, but credit to Sindhu for forcing a decider.
Sindhu led the decider 2-0, but Tunjung found her way back, going 4-2 up. The game remained in balance mostly, but from 13-13, Indonesian, who took bronze in the Paris Olympics, gained control.
Sindhu posted a straight-game win in her pre-quarterfinal tie against Japan's Manami Suizu. The India Open was Sindhu's first event of the New Year, as she had missed the season-opening Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur due to her wedding. She tied the knot with her fiance Venkata Datta Sai in a traditional wedding in Jaipur in mid-December.
