The decision comes in the light of the existing Supreme Court order that the universities are bound to follow the UGC guidelines.
The commission has asked the universities to take immediate steps to stop admissions to MPhil programmes for the 2023-24 academic year.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has also reiterated that none of these degrees will be valid and cautioned students against taking admission to such courses.
According to UGC, students who have completed or are pursuing a three-year UG course will not be able to apply for the one-year post-graduation programme. They will have to enrol for the two-year PG programmes like before.
This initiative stems from the significant developments following the introduction of 5G technology and the potential emergence of 6G.
