Robber's Cave, locally called Gucchupani is about 8 km from the city center. The river here flows between two steep valleys and there is a charming waterfall to top it. Trekking along the banks of the river is an unforgettable experience.
Har Ki Dun, at 3566 meters above sea level is a spot for the adventurers. This beautiful valley, shaped like a cradle, offers bewitching views of the snowcaps and the rich foliage of pine forests. From here, Baspa, one of the most scenic Himalayan valleys, can be accessed via the Borasu Pass.
Dehradun, Mussoorie, Chakrata, Hrishikesh all offer facilities for paragliding for the adventure-seekers. It would be a wonderful experience to glide over the mind-blowing landscape and get a bird's eye view. Paragliding can be booked in advance through National Adventure Sports Academy and Great Himalayan Adventures.
The George Everest Peak, named in honour of Sir George Everest, is another scenic spot some 6 km from Mussoorie. It was in honour of Sir George Everest as the Surveyor General of India between 1830 and 1843 that the highest peak in the world was so named. The view of the Dun valley to one side with the imposing snow peaks of the Himalayan ranges to the other make the George Everest Peak a hugely popular destination.
The Mindrolling Monastery is a place to visit for those seeking peace and tranquillity. The monastery was set up by Buddhist monks in 1965 at the Clement Town some 9 km from the Dehradun railway station. The Nagagyur Nyingma College, one of the biggest Buddhist institutes in India is situated here. Books teaching Buddhisam are available here and so are the traditional Tibetan cuisine.
Lacchiwala is one of the most popular picnic spots in the region. It is estimated that something like 2.5 lakh tourists visit this place annually to see the manmade ponds and the lush green forests.
Located at about 11 km from Dehradun, Sahasradhara is famous for the Sulphur Springs. True to its name which means one thousand streams, this place has numerous rivulets and waterfalls. There are several caves too. The terraced farmlands enhance the charm of the place. The sulphur springs are known to heal wounds. Altogether, Sahasradhara is a place for the body and the mind.
