Truly fruitfully yours! That’s what Froot Tree is. Here’s a Garden of Eden where the finest and juiciest fruits of the world can be had. Turn to Kottulipatteri on Mavoor Road in Kozhikode for a frooti feel in an open air green café. The ambiance is one of being bang in the middle of an orchard, biting into luscious, fresh fruit. This is where Froot Tree becomes a totally different experience.
The outlet, run by Day Fresh, owned by Kondotty-native K.P.Mustafa, is an import-export fresh fruit-vegetable retail chain doing brisk business in several countries including west Asia, a venture which began in 2009. With this, Mustafa set up outlets of Day Fresh first in Kuwait and later on in Saudi Arabia, exclusively for fresh fruits and vegetables. Today, Day Fresh supplies its stock to Saudi Arabia’s hypermarket chains like Lulu, Bindawood, Danube, Panda and Manuel. Apart from this, Day Fresh also set up fruit shops and cafes in Jeddah, Dhammam and Riyadh.
The retail chain’s next outing was to Dubai and Qatar. With fruits and vegetables flown out from Bengaluru, Kochi and Kozhikode airports, the venture has huge packing houses in these places with cold storage facilities.
Day Fresh is into big time import of fresh fruits and leaves from Thailand, Malaysia, Uganda, Bangladesh, South Korea, China, New Zealand, Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Oman, the US, Brazil, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Poland and Holland.
A Froot Tree for Kozhikode
Things got going in Kozhikode when the retail chain realized it had in Kozhikode a potential market for fresh fruits, leaves and vegetables. With T.Anwar joining in as partner, Day Fresh decided to treat Kozhikode to all the fruits of the world, the likes of which nobody had seen before. It also went a step forward and brought in exotic veg-based dishes into the outlet. The venture was set up in Kozhikode in January last.
That’s how Day Fresh zeroed in on the concept of a green café where exotic and hitherto unseen dry fruits, fruits and leaves could be served. Froot Tree is an open air café. No bricks and mortar here. The walls are tall trees that act as a green cover. Below these is a spread of pebbles. There are hanging gardens to one side of the café. The cabins and rooftops are improvised style elements crafted with eucalyptus branches bunched and tied together. The walls are splattered with colorful pictures and paintings. When the wall lights are lit up, the place gets bathed in an ethereal glow, providing the right ambience for a merry evening out.
Café menu
The highlights of the café are its special healthy meals and sandwiches. The healthy meal provides a choice of quail pepper masala, chicken-egg masala, chicken salad, broccoli chicken mayo, peanut masala and peanut-chana masala. The sandwiches come in as fruity-juicy, cheesy nuts, navaratna, nutty chicken, cheese egg, healthy veg and falafel. Also served along with these are side dishes of sprouts and pickled carrot, beetroot and cucumber.
You can also go in for an array of tea-coffee serves right from Yemeni, Kerala, suleimani, adani, green tea, Chennai filter coffee, dry fruits coffee and gawa Arabic combo.
Apart from all these come salads in different dressings, soups, fresh juices, special cakes with exotic fruits sourced from various countries, milk shakes, ice cream, lassi, soda special, mocktails, lemonade and falooda. The wheat grass juice made from sprouted wheat is a specially-made heath drink and one among the 13 health drinks Froot Tree is happy to serve.
There are facilities to host parties and party orders elsewhere are also accepted.
Froot Tree mini outlets
Plans are afoot to open two mini outlets of the café in different parts of the town, one in Thondayad bypass and the other on Wayanad Road. More outlets will soon come up all over Kerala.
Tea, coffee, cappuccino, juices and sandwiches come in special packs here. Day Fresh’s app allows customers into all that they want to know about the day’s menu, which also allows them to order food online. Anything you order is served within five minutes.
Arrangements are on to open franchisees under the name of Froot Tree Neighborhood in Kannur, Thalassery, Kottakkal, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram.
A carnival of dry fruits
Froot Tree has on offer a whole big tray of dry fruits, mostly of the native variety. Papaya, pineapple, guava, ripe and raw mango, jack fruit (vacuum dried), raw jackfruit, cucumber, figs, gooseberry, cassava and dried cassava are some of the serves. All these are preserved under the latest techniques and packed airtight.
Dry fruits from all around the world can also be had here. Imported pears, plums, avocado, red globe grapes, cactus figs, cocoa fruits, physalis, persimmon, salak, kumquat orange, blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, pitaya, Thailand guava, logout, nectarine and apricot find a place in Froot Tree’s basket.
Seven varieties of mango, organic pineapple, green apple and pineapple are added attractions. Olives, dates from all over the world, English cucumber, shamam, butter squash, galgal and several varieties of leaves like basil, lettuce, green lettuce, rosemary, iceberg, celery, parsley, palak, lemon grass, lemon leaf, spring onion and Chinese cabbage can also be had from the outlet.

Falafel
Garbanzo beans (chickpea), parsley, ginger and garlic are ground together and deep fried.
Rainbow salad
All sorts of sprouts are mixed with matching herbs and served.
Nutty chicken salad
Capsicum, iceberg, cucumber, nuts, mayonnaise, pepper, salt and tomato sauce are mixed with bread, covered in butter paper and grilled.
Three-mix falooda
It’s vanilla ice cream at the bottom, covered with fruits, khus-khus, semiya, nuts, kismis and tuti-fruti and topped with butter scotch, strawberry and pista ice creams.
