Kasargod: The state’s first model food street, which functions with the aid from the Central Government, is open now at Thalangara Corniche.

This is one of the four food streets about which the government made an announcement, recently. The project is initiated by the National Food Safety Authority in order to reduce food borne diseases and to encourage healthy eating habits.

There would be twenty one food kiosks as part of the project here. As of now, eight stores are open at Thalangara.

Inauguration to be held soon
The authorities informed that food street will start functioning full-fledged, after the official inauguration of the project, which is expected to be held soon.

The permit to run the food street has been granted to Malabar Water Sports and Holidays, a private firm, until November 14, 2024. The food street is set at the fifty cents land that is rented from the Kerala Maritime Board near Thalangara coastal police station.

Hamsa Koliyodu, who manages the project said that one could enjoy local flavors and many other varieties of food at the food street. The shops are close to the children’s park in the beach. Boat services too have been arranged here.

Meanwhile, the authorities hope that the food street would draw more number of tourists to the beach.

100 food streets across country
The government decision is to set up 100 food streets across the country. Though this would be beneficial for the development of tourism, the main objective is to prevent unhygienic conditions in food streets causing diseases.

While citing the data from 2016, it was pointed out that diseases caused due to the unhygienic food practices in India are up to 40 per cent more than China. Thus, the model food streets are being proposed with better hygienic facilities, drinking water, and proper methods for garbage disposal.
