Plum season near Kerala's Munnar: What to see, routes and more
Mail This Article
Kerala is experiencing a festive harvest of locally-grown plum fruits this year, just a few kilometres from Munnar in Kerala's Vattavada. The farms are mainly in the area's Pattiyankal, Chilanthiyar, and Pazhathottam regions. Many tourists are arriving to buy the plum fruits here, which, though small, have a unique, tangy-sweet flavour. They are expected to continue giving the harvest for the next two months. That said, depending on the rains, the fruits can ripen faster and many say this week would be an ideal time to check out the farms and buy the best fruits.
What route to take
If you are in Munnar for a day's trip and want to check out Vattavada and its fruit orchards, head to Vattavada Top Station. From here, you can head to Chilanthiyar via Koviloor Road. Take NH 85 to head to Pazhathottam. To buy the best quality plums, head to Koviloor Town or Chilanthiyaar. Fruits also grow naturally inside the Anaimudi Shola National Park's tribal settlement areas, however, tourists are not allowed entry into these regions.
What else to buy
This is also the season fo apple pear and peach. Many farms also have vegetables like beans and carrot. That said, unlike strawberry farms, it might not be possible to go on fruit plucking at orchards unless you are staying in them.
