Crimson fields of Kerala’s Vellayani lure tourists: What to know before you go

Vellayani, an idyllic village in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram district, has long charmed visitors with its tranquil lake, lush fields and rustic charm. Lately, the village has also been drawing visitors with its crimson sweep of fields that grow something that packs a powerful nutritional punch – red spinach. Bordered with greenery all around, the red spinach farms, owned by private individuals, have been drawing both local and foreign tourists alike to the region.
What to see?
Near Kakkamoola in Vellayani, the area features red spinach fields covering approximately 2.5 acres. Joy SS Panavila, a farmer from the region, says, “Anyone can visit these farms between 6 am and 6 pm. The farmers will be at work between 4.30 am and 1 pm here. If the visitors have any questions, they can approach farmers, buy seeds or vegetables as well.” However, he highlights a concern. “At times, visitors venture into the fields without exercising caution, and this damages our crops. They should stay along the borders of the fields and enjoy the scenery without disturbing the plants,” says Joy. The region follows the practice of crop rotation, which means that after growing spinach for a cycle, farmers plant another crop to manage pests and diseases better. “However, spinach is grown here for most of the year and visitors can see it, unless the fields get submerged in water due to monsoons,” Joy explains.
Attractions nearby
The renowned Vellayani Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the district, is near the fields. Tourists frequently visit the area to admire its lotus blooms, coconut groves, observe birds, and enjoy boating. Those interested in organic produce can also visit nearby farms and purchase their products. The College of Agriculture, Vellayani, is also located close by.
