Saudi Arabia bans overseas flights as new coronavirus spotted in UK

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has temporarily suspended all international flights and closed its land and sea routes.

Saudi's new travel ban comes in the wake of the new fast-spreading Coronavirus strain found in Britain.

According to Saudi news agency, the ban is for a week and if required it would be extended further. However, flights will be allowed in exceptional circumstances.

The authorities said the ban would not be applicable to international flights currently in Saudi.

The Saudi decision comes close on the heels of several European countries banning travel in the wake of Britain warning that the new strain of coronavirus was out of control.

The Saudi Kingdom has directed all persons who came from Britain after December 8 when the new strain was detected to go into two weeks self-quarantine and get the tests done.

After Saudi, neighbouring Kuwait has also banned flights from Britain.
