Thrissur: The popular annual pulikali dance procession that's held in the Onam season is scheduled for September 1, this year. Five teams will take part in the event that will be held at Swaranj Ground, on the fourth day of the Onam festival.

The corporation has decided to increase the monetary fund allowed for the festival to Rs 2.5 lakh. This significant decision was taken at the recently held Pulikali organising meeting. However, there is no clarity regarding the availability of fund that was promised by the government, last year. This year too, the funds wouldn’t be received in advance.

Pulikali, in which performers paint their bodies with tiger stripes in various colours and wear a similar mask, is a festival that also has the artists dancing to the traditional percussion instruments like chenda, thakil and udukku. Tiger hunting is the theme of the performance and every year, this is a much-awaited spectacle for which people arrive from across the world.
