Alappuzha: The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is also a historic event where records are broken and new ones are created every year. As the iconic annual regatta enters its 71st year, Karichal chundan is the snake boat that has won the most number of trophies, while UBC Kainakary is the most successful boat club. Here are a few records at the Nehru Trophy Boat Race:
1) Karichal chundan has won the coveted trophy 16 times
2) UBC Kainakary boat club has rowed to success 12 times
3) Pallathuruthy Boat Club has won for five consecutive years
4) The fastest performance was by Karichal chundan rowed by Pallathuruthy Boat Club. They finished in 4.14.35 minutes in the heats in 2024.
5) 21 chundan vallams have won the Nehru Trophy so far
6) Five boat clubs have won hattricks
7) Six captains have won hattricks
These are some of the records that may be broken this year:
1) If the Melpadan chundan rowed by Pallathuruthy Boat Club wins the trophy, then PBC would be the team to have the most number of consecutive wins. Besides, PBC would be the first club to win a double hattrick. Interestingly, it would be PBC’s third win of the season as the club had already won the Chambakkulam Moolam boat race and the Karumadi boat race early this year.
2) The United Boat Club would renew its record of being the boat club that has won the most number of trophies if its Thalavady chundan lifts the Nehru Trophy this year. Currently, they dominate the Nehru Trophy, having won it 12 times.
3) Pallathuruthy Boat Club had noted 4 minutes 14.35 seconds in a heats round in 2024, setting a record for the fastest snake boat. This record is likely to be broken this year.
4) If the Niranam chundan rowed by Niranam Boat Club wins, it would become the first snake boat from the east to grab the Nehru Trophy. Besides, Niranam is the first chundan vallam from Pathanamthitta district to compete in the legendary boat race.
5) There are a dozen more chundans and boat clubs that are vying to win their first-ever trophy.
