Kochi clam diggers hit a fortune in Kundannur backwaters, ‘Kakkachakara’ is back
- August 31 , 2025
The clams have returned to Kochi’s Kundannur backwaters after nearly five years!
Locals call it the ‘Kakkachakara’, a rare clam harvest that vanished soon after the Maradu flats demolition in 2020. Fishermen now believe the waters have finally healed, bringing back the once-abundant clams.
From traditional handpicking to the faster kolli nets, the harvest is drawing fishers from across Kerala — even as scientists study whether the demolition truly caused the disappearance.
Watch how the backwaters are alive again with boats, nets, and baskets brimming with clams.
